Google Business Profile in Baku — a step-by-step setup
The cheapest local SEO move for a Baku business is a properly set up Google Business Profile. What one hour of careful setup actually returns.
The single highest-leverage marketing move for a local Baku business in 2026 is also the cheapest one: a properly set up Google Business Profile. It costs zero, takes about an hour, and decides whether customers searching for what you do find you on Google Maps and in the local pack — or find your competitor. Most Baku businesses fill it out badly and never touch it again. This is the order to do it in.
Why this matters more than it looks
When someone in Baku types "dentist near me" or "Italian restaurant Yasamal" into Google, the first thing they see — above the regular blue links — is the Google Maps "local pack" of three businesses. Those three slots are filled by Google Business Profile data, not by the businesses' websites.
So the question of whether you appear in the local pack is mostly a question of whether your Google Business Profile is properly set up, complete, and active. A perfect website with a neglected profile loses to a mediocre website with a strong profile, every time, for local search.
The math is brutal in your favour: most local Baku businesses have profiles that are either auto-generated, half-filled, or untouched since 2019. If you spend an hour doing this correctly, you'll be in the top quartile of profile quality in your category in a week.
Step 1 — claim or create
Go to business.google.com, sign in with the email you actually use for the business (not a personal one), and search for your business name and address. Three things can happen:
- The profile exists, unclaimed. Click "claim this business." Google will verify by postcard to your Baku address (usually 1–2 weeks), by phone, by email, or by video — depending on category.
- The profile exists, claimed by someone else. If it's claimed by a former employee or a previous owner, you'll need to file a transfer request. This takes 2–6 weeks. Start now.
- No profile exists. Create one. Same verification steps follow.
Use the legal business name as it appears on your tax registration, not a marketing variant. Google checks against state records, and stuffing keywords into the name ("Tom's Pizza — Best Pizza in Baku") is a violation that can suspend the profile entirely.
Step 2 — categories
This is where most profiles go wrong. The primary category determines what searches you appear for. You get one primary and up to nine secondary categories.
Pick the most specific primary category that genuinely describes your business. "Italian restaurant" is better than "Restaurant." "Family law attorney" is better than "Lawyer." Specificity wins.
For secondaries, add categories your customers might search by — but don't stretch. "Cafe" as a secondary for an Italian restaurant is honest; "Bar" is a stretch if you don't really run as a bar, and Google detects category abuse over time.
Step 3 — NAP (name, address, phone)
NAP consistency is the single most underrated local SEO factor. The exact name, exact address, exact phone number must appear identically:
- On your Google Business Profile
- On your website footer and contact page
- On every directory listing — sektor.az, 2GIS, Yandex Maps, Foursquare, Bing Places
- On your Facebook business page and Instagram bio
If your phone is "+994 12 555 55 55" on Google and "(012) 555-55-55" on your website, those are two different strings to a crawler. Pick one canonical format and propagate it everywhere.
For the address, use the format Azerbaijan Post recognises. The pin location is also important — drag it to the actual entrance of your premises, not the centre of the building or the rough street.
Step 4 — photos
Profiles with 20+ photos perform measurably better than ones with 3. Upload:
- 3–5 exterior shots — the entrance, the storefront, the sign at street level.
- 5–10 interior shots — the actual space, not stock images.
- 5–10 product or service shots — real food on real plates, real treatments in the real room.
- 2–3 team shots — humans, not headshots.
- A logo and a cover photo.
No stock photography. Google's algorithm is good at detecting it, and customers know it on sight.
Step 5 — services or menu
Add every service or product as a separate item, with a short Azerbaijani description and (where the category supports it) a price. For restaurants, upload the menu. For service businesses, list every service category with its own description.
This populates the right-hand "Services" panel on the profile and gives Google more text to match against searches. A profile with 18 listed services ranks for more queries than one with three.
Step 6 — the description
You get 750 characters. Use them. Write a real description of what the business does, in Azerbaijani, naturally — not a stuffed list of keywords. Mention the neighbourhood ("in Yasamal," "near Sahil metro") because location-specific signals help.
Step 7 — reviews
The ongoing job, not the setup job.
- Get to 20+ reviews in the first six months. Below 10, you're invisible; above 20, you're competitive.
- Reply to every review — positive ones briefly, negative ones substantively. Reply rate matters to the algorithm and to humans reading the profile.
- Never buy reviews. Google's detection has gotten very accurate, and a fake-review penalty is hard to recover from.
- Ask in person, after a good interaction. "If you have a minute, a Google review really helps us." That works. QR codes on receipts also work.
Step 8 — posts and Q&A
Post weekly — an update, an offer, an event, a new product. Posts decay after seven days and the profile gets a freshness signal from regular activity.
Seed the Q&A section yourself with the five questions customers actually ask. Answer them clearly. Otherwise the section sits empty or gets filled by random visitors guessing.
What this returns
For a typical small Baku business that goes from a half-finished profile to a properly set up one, the typical lift in the first 90 days is:
- 3–8× increase in "discovery" searches (where the customer found you without typing your name).
- 2–4× increase in direction requests and phone calls from the profile.
- Top-3 local pack ranking for 5–15 mid-tail queries in your category.
None of these guaranteed, all of these typical. The work is one hour up front, fifteen minutes a week ongoing.
